Vitamin C is the rare active that everyone recognizes and almost nobody specifies. On a serum it functions as a marketing word. On an injectable label it is a defined molecule with a form, a neutralization, a concentration, and a shelf life measured against light and air, and those four things decide almost everything about how a product is packaged, priced, and shipped. What injectable vitamin C actually is
Injectable vitamin C is L-ascorbic acid, the same water-soluble molecule found throughout the body, prepared for parenteral rather than topical use. It sits in the vitamins and injectables category, grouped by composition rather than by any claimed effect, and it is neither a filler, nor a booster built on a polymer, nor a neuromodulator. In the Korean range it appears both as a single-active solution and as one declared component inside a compounded ampoule.
Two boundaries are worth stating at the start, because they govern how the rest of this page is written. This hub describes what the molecule is and how products containing it are specified; it makes no claim about skin effects, and it does not address brightening or whitening, which is a claims area rather than a composition one. Injectable and topical vitamin C are also not interchangeable products: they are different routes, different regulatory categories, and different formulations that happen to share an active.
Form and neutralization
The single most useful thing on a vitamin C label is the form. Ascorbic acid is an acid, and at concentration it is not a mild one, with a first ionization constant near pH 4 that puts a concentrated solution of the free acid well down the acidic end of the scale.1 An injectable is expected to sit near a physiologically tolerable pH, so manufacturers neutralize: the free acid is partially or fully converted to its sodium salt, sodium ascorbate, typically with sodium hydroxide or sodium bicarbonate.
This is why the two names appear almost interchangeably across labels, and why a product that says only "vitamin C" has disclosed less than it appears to. Ascorbic acid, sodium ascorbate, or a stated combination are three different statements about what was done to the solution before it reached the vial.
Why it is packaged like something fragile
Ascorbate is useful precisely because it is a reducing agent, which is another way of saying it is built to be oxidized. That reaction does not wait for a body. In aqueous solution near neutral pH, ascorbate oxidizes readily, and the reaction is accelerated by dissolved oxygen, by light, and catalytically by trace transition metals such as copper and iron that arrive as impurities rather than as ingredients.1 Degradation also runs on a schedule rather than as an event: content declines progressively with warmer storage and longer standing, which is why stability statements in this class are always conditional on a temperature and a window.2
Everything that looks like over-engineering on these products follows from that. Amber glass, inert-gas headspace, chelating agents, refrigerated and light-protected storage, cartons that stay closed until use: the FDA-approved intravenous ascorbic acid product in the United States is labeled for storage at 2 to 8 degrees Celsius, protected from light, kept in its carton until the time of use.3 A spec sheet that reads like a cold-chain document is describing the molecule, not padding the label.
How it reaches the catalog
Because the aqueous phase is where the trouble happens, manufacturers resolve it in one of three ways, and each shifts what a buyer has to read.

The split matters for comparison as much as for handling. A milligram of ascorbate in a single-active vial and a milligram declared inside a compounded ampoule are not equivalent purchasing units, because the second comes fixed inside a formulation whose other components, buffering, and storage history are part of what is being bought. Vitamin C and its neighbors
On the same shelf sits glutathione, the other antioxidant that arrives packaged like something breakable, and for the same underlying reason: aqueous instability drives the format. The two are different molecules, a small vitamin and a tripeptide, and neither is a version of the other. Regulatory reality
Status here is narrower than most buyers assume. In the United States, an intravenous ascorbic acid product does hold FDA approval, but its indication is short-term treatment of scurvy in patients for whom oral administration is not possible, insufficient, or contraindicated, with an explicit limitation excluding vitamin C deficiency that lacks the signs and symptoms of scurvy.3 No injectable vitamin C is FDA-approved for aesthetic or skin-related use, and topical ascorbic acid is sold as a cosmetic only for as long as no drug-like claim is attached to it.4
In South Korea, injectable vitamin C is regulated as a drug under the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety rather than as a cosmetic, which is why these products carry drug-style labeling, a licensed manufacturer, and a designated Korean license holder. That authorization is a fact about Korea and does not travel with the goods; what may be imported, held, or used elsewhere is a separate question for the destination market. Common questions
What is the difference between ascorbic acid and sodium ascorbate?
They are the free acid and its sodium salt. Injectable products are neutralized so the finished solution sits near a physiologically tolerable pH, usually by converting some or all of the ascorbic acid to sodium ascorbate. A label naming only "vitamin C" has not stated which form or how it was neutralized.
Why does injectable vitamin C need refrigeration and light protection?
Because ascorbate oxidizes in aqueous solution, accelerated by dissolved oxygen, light, and trace metal ions, and because that degradation increases with warmer storage and longer standing. The packaging and storage terms exist to slow a reaction the molecule undergoes on its own.
Is injectable vitamin C approved for aesthetic use?
